Gare du Nord to Gare Montparnasse

I'm off to Poitiers by train on Tuesday with my two young daughters, we have to get across Paris and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to if it would be better to go by Metro or take a taxi? I really need the least hassle method, taxi seems obvious but is the Metro easy with two tots in tow?

The connection at St Michel from RER B line to Metro line no4 is long and unpleasant.

You could of course change at Chatelet or Denfert-Rochereau instead but I'm not sure what they are like. Alternatively, take the Metro no4 the whole way, which might be simpler!

The metro station under GdN is massive and complicated. Metro 4 might be easy, or it might not be. I'm afraid I don't know, as I always switch to RER B.

What time do you arrive at GdN? In rush hour it is a cattle market.

As the father of a 3 year old and 1 year old, I sympathize!

We arrive at about 2.00pm and we're fairly tight for time so I think I might opt for a taxi on the way out, we have 4 hours on the way home so we might brave the Metro then!
