We're remaining in France for a week after Le Mans for a short holiday. Am looking at the possibility of camping, as we'll have all the gear anyway.

How would I go about seeking out camp sites that are of a high standard (toilets and showers in particular) but are in picturesque surroundings, and crucially, are not populated entirely by families with millions of kids. No water slides, playgrounds and ball pools would help.

I have this image of camping in the grounds of a nice château, a short walk to a beautiful village with a bar and shop. Near the coast would be good, but not essential. No idea if such a place exists.

Ideally it could do with being within 4 or 5 hours of Le Mans.

The PH massive came up trumps with hotels for my honeymoon so this should be easy.

I own a camping site in the Pyrenees, very close to alot of the cols used by the Tour de France. What better way to finish of you trip than hooning around the mountains with very little interest from the law.

Try:
Le Moulin Fort which is near Chenenceau [sp?] and Amboise in the loire
Camping le Capeyrou which is in Beynac in the Dordogne. 10 mins from Sarlat which is fab.

Went last year, both excellent facillities, on rivers, have pools and bars.

Got them from Cool Camping France.

Smiffy - whats the summer walking like in that area? Any chairlifts/cable cars open to get to the heights? (i'm a fan of the downhill... not so much the uphill!!!!)

Some really good walking,we are just off the GR10.Downhill you would have to go to Luchon or Ax les Thermes as they are bigger stations but the trade of is the scenery and prices. This department has no real industry just tourism which is still in its infancy so still has a long way to go before it gets as busy as the Alps or Dordogne.Ariege is the least populated department because 50% is mountainous and very laid back, which is its appeal.Last summer we had a few very hot days(40 degrees) so when it's hot it is proper hot.
This summer work is supposed to start on building a downhill course and luge track up at Guzet(15-20 minutes away) so the chair lifts may be open,Because Guzet is the smallest station operated by Altiservice it's the last to be properley developed

Thanks Smiffy, looks lovely but is too far south for this trip. We would be leaving Le Mans to come south on the 14th June, but need to be back in Boulogne for the ferry on the 21st. I once drove Nice to to a house in Normandy in one day and would like to a avoid a similar experience again. We could break the journey up but it shortens stay and the Mrs. wont like the hassle of putting the tent up fo a stopover.

Having said that, I will bear you in mind for the future, as the south west is on our to do list. How easy is it to make excursions into Spain? We have family in San Sebastien.

Thanks, Good suggestions, Dordogne is a possibility, but Cenenceau is out as we visited that area last year.

Cheers. Sadly, La Rochelle/Ile de Re formed part of our 2009 trip. Keep 'em coming though.

You'd be picky too if you were going camping for two weeks with a woman who considers an afternoon in the garden to be a bit uncomfortable. laugh The problem is, the first week is at Le Mans which is not the best introduction to camping so the second week needs to be damned good if I'm not to suffer for a very long time afterwards.

Stayed there too! It is in the shadow of the town walls, with an easy walk in to town!

Used to stay at St Clement de Balenes just along from the brilliantly named Ars. Was a brilliant camp site until all the trees got blown down in a storm frown

I think 2 weeks under canvas is a bit much for a first timer.
Why not treat her to some nice B&Bs for the second week?.

A bit of a comprimise I know, but your more likely to find the idyll you seek and the sex will definitely be better.

I know what you are saying, I have thought about the B&B option. The reason I thought more camping is because the car will be loaded to the roof with all the gear and it will annoy me carting it round not being used. Also, one of fundamentals behind the Le Mans trip is that it is a pretty cheap holiday. Hotels put the cost up significantly.

I do have back-up plan, the in-laws have a house about an hour north of Le Mans, if the toys come out of the pram we can retreat there.

You've plenty of time between now and June to save up the cost of a few nights B&B.
If you need to, you can free up space in your car be sending your camping gear home via DHL. A 15kg parcel can be sent from the UK to France or less than £25, so the reverse route must be similarly costed.

Whatever you decide to do, always remember, no girl likes an uncompromisng tightwad.

You aren't spending a whole week at LM with the Mrs are you? Most people don't get there until Wed or Thurs and leave on sunday night/monday morning. It's more of a long weekend IMO.

As usual (this is Le Mans no.7), leave home Tuesday, arrive at Le Mans Wednesday, leave Le Mans on Monday. Admitedly, the 1st night is in a Travel Inn. So one day short of a week. The ideal stay in my book.

Anyway, we were strolling round ASDA and Wife asked if I wanted to camp at Nurburgring for the second week. I said no, but you see how she's used to me.
