Is going on holiday alone sad?
Discussion
Seen as though my 3 closest mates are now completely pussy whipped, coupled with the fact i have not been away anywhere sunny for 3 years, i was considering going to somewhere like Mexico (lots to do and hot) on my own in june or july for 2 weeks.
I keep thinking this is very sad though, nearly in the realms of going to the cinema alone?
What does the collective think?

It depends how comfortable you are with your own company and how easy you find it talking to new people
I have been away alone in the past and have had a ball
Quite happy in my own company, i have lived alone for long enough, talking to new people is easier with lots of alcohol i find... I have been away alone in the past and have had a ball

I booked a holiday cottage a few years back, and was meant to be joined by a mate half way through the week but as normal things never worked out as we had planned.
So I ended up spending a week on my tod, with several bottles of vino....quite relaxing actually, and I would do it again.

I do it quite often and love it, you do what you want at your own pace.
Only thing I'd say is personally I like to fill my time when away, so it's a good idea to know what you are wanting to see/do whilst away. That said I've a friend who goes away herself and does nothing more than sit on a beach & read books for a fortnight.
You do end up meeting loads of people, however I always find evenings toughest to be on your own, I tend to always choose a hotel with a swimming pool for this reason as it is a good place to chill out on your own.

Don't worry about it too much - just get out there and let your hair down!Mexico you say? Good times to be had. I'm sure you'll meet some lovely locals.

I split up with the other 1/2 in October. The 1st thing i did was book flights to Thailand followed by Australia. Not having her as baggage was fantastic it meant I could do what I liked when I liked. She didn't enjoy some of the things I do such as sailing, extreme sports, diving etc.. I left just before xmas and came back towards the end of Jan... best time I've had in years. Met some fantastic people I'm still in touch with and will see again.
The best advice I can give - Book flights only and the 1st few days accommodation somewhere bang in the middle of wherever you're going but not a holiday complex. Do plenty of research before you go and avoid doing the "normal" tourist things all of the time. Spend the 1st few days acclimatising and take it from there. You WILL meet people unless you're a weapons grade penis
You will bang plenty of interesting women, unless you're an ugly b
d without a personality or your bits don't work. (even if the above applies go to Thailand and pay for company, plenty do but it's not really challenging
)
You have a very different holiday on your own, I went traveling on my own as a teenager, I'm now 31 and didn't think twice, I'm going for a month over Christmas this year too... even if Mrs right turns up - she'll just have to wait!

Last Summer I went to Alaska on my own because I could not find anyone to go with. My girlfriends all have children and my boyfriend did not want to take time off work so I went alone and had a great experience. I got to see the real Alaska and being on my own pushed me out of my comfort zone of being shy and self conscious.
In June I am going to Nova Scotia on my own as it has always been one of those places I would like to visit.

I don't think it's sad at all! A few years ago I took myself off to New Zealand to tour round on bike for 3 1/2 months, and being on your own is great! You do not have to compromise, do anything you don't want to, and there's no whining or bickering! It also encourages you to get chatting to folk, and after all, people are what gives a country a large part of its character.
Some may see being on your own as sad, but it's pretty rare in normal life to be able to be so selfish and do just what you want to do and no more!
Edited to try and add a gratuitous pic of me on the bike, but the Image Uploader isn't working at the 'mo!

I enjoy going/visiting places on my own - though don't really class them as proper holidays.
I'm thinking of having a gap year ( I'm 50) and doing a mix of voluntary and paid work abroad. 6 months paid in China as TEFL, 5-6 weeks voluntary in Galapos Islands and visiting anywhere else that takes my fancy
I'll be going on my own but still don't consider what I'd be doing as a holiday, more like travlling
