Recommend me a USA Fly drive specialist

14 nights, June or July 2010, probably do a Calif/Nevada itinerary

I've looked at Kuoni and Virgin holidays, who unsurprisingly are $$$

can anyone recommend a specialist, with better experience and better value than the above.

Ideally a trip you've been on.

We arranged our fly-drive in April through Trailfinders: 0121 236 1234, spoke to a chap callad Matt Lawrence who was exeptionally helpful.
You could do worse than ask them for a quote.

We also found trailfinders a helluva lot more helpful and knowledgeable than virgin,their 'cowboy country' flydrive tour which includes Yellowstone is epic!

Either Trailfinders or do it yourself.

Flights aren't difficult to book, and you can sgio around for cars.

My tips:

The more intersting cars like the Hertz "Fun Collection" tend to be only available if you drop them off where you pick them up. Try Budget too.

If you're in the desert carry plenty of water and keep an eye on fuel.

Always have the first night booked when you fly to the USA, it will make life easier with immigration. (But it'll still take ages.)

Some of the hostels, especially in the city centres, have private rooms, and are all you'll need. Spend the money on Grand Canyon helicopter trips or something.

Try and stay at "Mom and Pop" motels, although the decor might be a bit unusual, the owners are always more interesting to talk to, and glad of the custom.

Indeed. We turned up, collected a car and had a hotel booked for the first few nights. Half the fun is pointing the car down the road and seeing what turns up...

We used Travel City Direct for our Florida trip in the summer - they are a division of Virgin Holidays now, so use Virgin Atlantic flights. We found them pretty good value for the summer.

Couldn't agree more, why pay an agent when you can do it yourself.

More fun doing it your own way rather than someone telling you where to go.

If you must have someone work it all out for you try Wexas.com they are very good.
