Anyone done it?

I don't mean the RedBull F1 team I mean the snorting brutes in Pamplona. I have been invited to join a particularly mad Army mate of mine at this years Bull Run, don't know much about it and im not a fan of being trampled to death but im sure it would be worth spectating with a cold beer.

Doesn't just happen in Pamplona. Lots of town/villages have bull runs during their 'Fiestas'.

I've done it in my wife's village. They don't use big bulls though, they use steers. They still have big horns though. Good fun, if a little bit scary. I saw my brother in law hurdle a six foot fence with one six inches from his chuff. I swear to God he didn't touch the fence on the way over! On the plus side, you are allowed to run into other peoples houses/corrals to get out the road. Most of the time they would give you a 'porron' full of wine to get you over the shock.

I've done it - now I am old(er) and (more) sensible. I must admit it was the longest, drunkest party that I have ever been to. Starts at dawn and you head down towards the Bullring where the bulls for that night's bullfight are released from the corral and run to their final destination through the streets for about 900m. That night, they fight to the death...

The local Spanish men wear white clothing with a red sash and carry a newspaper to swat the bulls away. The rest of the world which consists largely of Kiwis, Aussies, South Africans and some Brits wear vomit stained clothes and stumble, mostly injured by banging their heads on cobbles and swear allegiance to Sangria and cheap beer. The morning's festivities are followed by more drinking and diving off statues - girls do it topless, great spectator event. Nightime music festival in Citadel with amazing fireworks and more gallons of Sangria.

It too about 10 days to recover after 5 days in Pamps.

Something you do and tick it off, then do it again if you are mad enough.

I'm off to Arcos in cadiz to visit a mate at the end of March.

He's just informed that the running of the bull is on when I'm there.

Should be fun smile

Did 2 runs last year in Pamplona, the second one was the one that the student got gored to death. The madest, 5 day bonkers festival ever. The day usually went:

1) Get up/woken up at 6am after max 3 hrs sleep - usually to a 20 piece marching band coming through the square with 200+ people in tow dancing/singing along.
2) Go participate or watch the run which starts at 8am sharp. It gets really packed, so you need to get there early.
3) Have first beer at apx 8.30am after race. Sit at various bars, meander around town, loads going on you just bump into, real festival atmosphere.
4) Food, more beers, more wondering.
5) Siesta apx 3pm ish. Get up 6pm and repeat 4).
6) Party till your stamina allows till 6am when repeat 1).

The run itself is REALLY INTENSE. The adrenaline rush is crazy, it's a really nervy build up. Its best to walk the course a few times before hand, they do tours of it. However, when the bulls run, its every man for themselves on the course. This isn't a jog with your mates, this is a river of people literally sprinting for their lives. The bulls are huge, their back bone is shoulder height to me and I'm 6ft and they come at you and past you fast. You will not be able to out run them or keep up with them for long. Watch the stray ones that get seperated. This is when the trouble starts as they get scared and charge. They are really unpredictable. There are also not as many places to get out the course as you might think either. There is nothing to prepare you for it, no comparison.

Morals aside, if you get the chance to do it, go for it! I thought it was fecking brilliant. Let me emphasise this - the maddest, bonkers festival ever.

Well, if it is one of those where a bunch of tiny types end up poking them with spears and swords, then I hope that they manage to gore and injure a lot of folks on their way, then.

Oh, the bulls manage to gore & kill along the way ... to the bullring at the end of the run, where they're penned up and used in the bullfight later that day.

Pamplona 2008 - the only place I've been on a stag where we didn't stand out as there were thousands there more pissed than us! laugh
