Accident in Spain

Guys
Can anybody help with this, I had an accident while on a trackday at Cartagena and was admitted to hospital overnight, I was asked for and presented my euro nhs card thingy, didn't think anymore of it, but a few weeks ago received an invoice from the hospital, I had insurance cover for the trip but thought that there was a reciprocal healthcare system across Europe, is this not the case?

Is the invoice for your actual treatment? Was it possibly an 'extra' charge somehow not covered like food or ambulance etc?

I've used the card abroad loads (not in Spain) but never had to pay anything.

Thanks, been in touch with my insurance company, they'll sort ot out and poss reclaim the fee.
