Tripadvisor also did a list of the top 10 dirtiest in Europe, and 8 of the 10 were in the UK.

(Hope I'm not falling foul of the name and shame rule here).

As long as the Travelodge at Liverpool Street isn't on the list, I don't mind. wink

Blackpool & London

Any surprise that those on the list are 2 of the big touristy places?

Didn't think so...

Hope it's not a "name and shame", but the Aberdeen Douglas hotel is, without a doubt, the rankest sthole I've ever stayed in.

No big surprise really but they need to get their act together.

The Rembrandt in Weymouth is the worst I've seen, piss stained carpets round the bog, filthy curtains, food and grime smeared glass

You'll probably be pleased to hear that it's gone now (don't know if it was ever listed in TripAdvisor but it's now now).

There was a bit of a fuss as it was "demolished" a week before the deadline for objections. British Waterways said it was sinking.

Hotel cleanliness or lack of never ceases to surprise me since I once 'lost' my passport when staying in a hotel that I'd always thought was OK. The passport turned up in the wrong jacket but that's a side issue.

Looking for the passport I had to search my room, and trust me I know how to search a room. Amongst the things I found I'd rather not talk about were 4 (four) TV remotes in addition to the one sitting on the top of the idiot box. Thus four people had managed to 'lose' the TV remote, gone down to reception got another one and the cleaning over time had been so lousy they'd never found these other remotes.

When TripAdvisor expand beyond Europe for their reviews, this hotel I am very familiar with will be sure to be up there:

Walked into this reasonable clean and smart lobby on 30th Dec after being let down at the last minute for a place to stay. After walking the streets of xxxxxxxxx for three and half hours with a huge backpack and day pack I was thinking I'd be walking until dawn until the very friendly guy at reception at this place told me he had a room. This should have been a warning in itself! I was so tired I didn't bother asking to look upstairs or at the room. Bad move. As soon as I walked up the stairs the look and smell of the place changed dramatically. The place was filthy and stinking, it sounded like a cross between a brothel and a crack house from the movies and had plenty of unsavoury characters hanging around the halls which smelled of a mixture of body odour and piss. Once inside the room, things didn't get any better. It stank just as badly, everything was smashed and the graffiti on the walls spoke of rape, child abuse and police brutality. The combination of the itchy bed and constant noise throughout the night which went unchecked by any staff meant that I would have been better off sitting on a park bench for the night. Unless you're looking to pick up a diseased prostitute with a crack habit or fancy bringing some bed bugs on your travels with you, I would avoid this place like the plague.

Stayed at the xxxx the week before and after New Year's only because everything else was booked. The staff was nice enough, especially xxx, a gentleman from Finland who also sings opera professionally. They got me one of their more decent rooms (there aren't many). View of an alley and rooftop but the bed was okay and the TV big. Problems started when bed bugs began feasting on me the first night. The staff gave me insecticide to use and then an exterminator solved the problem a few days later. A bigger issue at the xxxxx is that it's infested with bigger bugs, the two-legged kind. The xxxxx is what we in the U.S. would call a hooker hotel, only in "no worries" Australia, it's business as usual. There are a lot of street walkers that operate out of the xxxxx and most of them are "Ice" Queens, as in they shoot up with Ice AKA meth-amphedemine in the U.S. (each xxxxx room has a needle disposal bucket). I never really felt threatened by these ladies but some of the blokes (dealers?) wandering about the halls were a little scary. So if you're into a different kind of hotel experience, go for it.
The worst thing about this place is it had a website showing what appeared to be a formal dining room and markets itself as 'A family owned hotel'. Imagine if you booked your Australian accomodation from the UK and landed up there...?!

The International Hotel in Manchester.

Imagine (a friend's) surprise when he got to his room to find there was... no bed!
Just a clean bit of non-sticky carpet where a bed had once stood.

Grand hotel in Scarborough is quite shocking considering how great it look from the outside (gigantic victorian listed-building in immaculate condition). Had to sleep with most my clothes on because i didn't want their 'blankets' touching my skin.

The worst hotel I've ever stayed in was in Moscow, next to Kievskaya station (I think it was called Hotel Kievskaya)... It was like something out Max Payne the computer game. The walls were hardboard, the carpet was extremely threadbare throughout, the doors were ridiculously flimsy, you got a bed with a dilapidated matress and some threadbare (but thankfully clean) linen... beown water out of the shower and taps... don't leave anything in your room. Place was frequented by some very dodgy and down at heel russians... outside there were rows of grannies selling what they could to scrape a living I guess (cabbages, one or two potatoes each, clutched in their hands) and there were several worryingly still drunks sleeping rough outside the hotel (in february...) when I returned to the hotel in the evenings.

Worst hotel for me was in Macau. Looked fine on their website, get there at midnight and it's a tiny cubicle with walls that are a foot off the floor and don't connect to the ceiling. Like a toilet really.

That and it was right by an open staircase, with the floor below being a disgusting looking brothel. Showers were shared with them too, didn't have one while I was there though!
