Is it worth going? Going to do a 4 day break around August, I fancy Berlin or somewhere like that, she fancies Milan, so either way we are going to Milan by the looks of things, so what is there to see, where to stay, bear in mind we are being cheap about this so no fancy hotels, but hostels are out of the question.

Been to both and to be honest, I preferred Berlin.Heaps to see and do in Berlin, Reichestag, the wall, alexandraplatz, and heaps more like the Olympic Stadium.
Milan, was just a day trip really, go to the San Siro, that's amazing.
I would say...go to Berlin

I have lived just outside milan for 3.5 years. There is not enough to fill 4 days of standard tourism (excluding repetitive shopping). August is not the best time to see Italy, as certainly for the middle weeks, it is either packed solid with people on holiday, or shut.
If you do go, I would consider day trips to bergamo, como, brescia, stresa, monza.
