I'm planning an Eastern European family driving holiday starting from Split in Croatia and have a rough plan of seeing places in Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Czech and finally back through Austria to Italy where we live. We might even go into Slovenia, we went there last year and enjoyed it so much it will be worth a detour if we have time.

We are looking to see nature reserves, historic towns, cities, transport museum's, hrose riding, white-water rafting, beaches, lakes, rivers, wild life, spa's, a couple of luxury hotels, war sites, motor racing event, festivals, Roman sites, castles etc, etc.

Can anyone recommend some must do places to see and character hotels or B&B's.

I can recommend Dubrovnik - Mostar - Kotor for the beginning of your trip. All lovely historic cities within reasonable distance of each other.

Thanks, Mostar was already our first stop, been to Dubrovnik and really enjoyed it but like the look of Kotor in Montenegro

I was in Lviv, Ukraine this weekend. Really beautiful city and well worth a visit - just over the Polish border. However, I have no idea whether driving there is an issue. We used the train from Krakow / Katowice and no visa required with UK passport.

Romania: Cluj in the north west is a lovely city. University town so lots of really good clubs, bars, etc (can recommend the Irish bar "Euphoria").

Motor Sport - WRC Rally Bulgaria in the north in July.
