I know that this may get moved soon but I just wanted to get a varied opinion. I'm thinking about going on holiday later this year but all of my friends either want to go clubbing non stop for a week in Ibiza or can't afford to go away. Whereas I quite fancy just going away somewhere for a couple of weeks without my mobile or laptop and forcing myself to relax, and not have to do what other people want to do.So has anybody else ever just gone away alone?

Every now and then I'll bugger off up north for a couple of days with a tent, or go wigamming (www.wigwamholidays.com)

Its great! :-)

Yep. It's great. I went to Cairns. Toured about, saw touristy stuff, read loads of books in the sunshine. Nice doing only exactly what you want any time you want to do it.

I was thinking about somewhere like Barbados. I've got some family there I could visit but would just be me, a nice White beach and a rum punch most of the time. I think I'm talking myself into it more and more.

Yep, went to the US last year, Florida and New England over a fortnight. Caught up with friends late on in NH, but the rest of it was just me. Makes you talk to strangers and do things differently. Was great! biggrin

Am planning another jaunt to Italy later this year too, on the bike this time.

It's good for just unwinding as you can do whatever the hell you like and not have to worry about someone else.

I thought you were going to say you filled the car with chocolate for the return journey!

Back on topic.

Yes I went abroad on my own, I was between jobs and everyone else was working.

In my opinion it was great, however you might find:

- Some of the hotel / resort staff think you are strange (this might just be me though!).
+ You might also find that some other people on holiday in bigger groups (or with boring partners!) latch onto you in a bid to escape who they are with.

Brother in Law has done it a few times. He loves it, but I guess you need to have the mentality to do it. I couldn't or wouldn't but that's me. That said BiL managed to get laid a few times with other like minded single-holidayers - so its not all bad.

It's worth trying to stay in Youht Hostels when you go to cities, you'll meet loads of other back packing types who you can tag a long with for a while.

I used to love travelling alone, won't get the chance again I suspect...

frown

afraid I bottled it

2 years ago I was due a couple of solo days after Le Mans pootling around Normandy or Brittany before coming home Tuesday evening

Some mates and I always go to a small town on the Orme on Sunday night after the race for a relaxing return to civilisation before the Channel Dash on Monday

On Monday morning I bottled it and phoned for an early ferry

Now I am deeply ashamed, I have done the post race Normandy days with mates before, but this solo effort suddenly daunted me...

But

one day I will

maybe next year

I will also say this: holiday "romance" prospects increase whilst travelling alone...just because you aren't held back by the need to socialise with one's travelling companions. If she says "come over to my place, tomorrow" you are free to go...

I'm getting sick of trying to arrange a holiday with any of my mates, one of them has been on about going for 2 years now since he split up with his Mrs but goes all quiet when it comes to actually booking something - there have been a couple of times where I've considered going on my own if he decided not to go, but by the time he's finished umming and arring the prices have gone up so have ended up not going.
I haven't been on a proper holiday for 4 years now due to a combination of splitting up with the Mrs, being too ill to go for about 10 months and being made redundant (not all at the same time mind), so reckon it's about time I went.
2 of my mates are off to Amsterdam for a weekend next month, but as no one else wants to go - the affore mentioned mate did his usual umming and arring and then decided he didn't want to go and in the meantime the flights have gone up - then it would cost bloody fortune for me to go for a weekend where I'll probably end up looking round Amsterdam on my own as the other 2 are likely to be spending most of their time in the cafés.
So, if I'm going to end up paying over the odds to go, I'm considering going away on my own and going something different, so have I'm considering doing a roadtrip around the South West of America going round LA, Death Vally, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, San Francisco and down the Pacific Coat Highway as it's something that I've fancied doing for years, but it's been one of those that's been on the back burner as everyone likes the idea, but again, no one actually wants to commit to going.
I've been looking at flights, hotels etc over the weekend, still haven't quite managed to get a total cost for it yet as I'm finding it hard to fit everything in to the 2 weeks I want to do it in - I could easily stretch it into about 6 months! And I think I've managed to haggle myself down from a Corvette ZHZ to a Chevy Tahoe, it's still got a V8 and more likely to be able to get up to the Race Track in Death Valley without leaving bits of bumper etc behind and it's less than a third of the price.

When I was between jobs I found myself in a similar situation.

i wanted something short notice and didn't want to look too weird travelling by myself. I decided to make sure I had something to keep myself busy and could do something where I didn't have to talk to anyone if i didn't fancy it. I ended up booking a last minute break to sharm el sheikh and on to a diving course, something I'd not done before. had a superb time!

I've done it a load of times. Normally after a conference somewhere I stay on for a week or so and have a wander.

Some of the best holidays I've had have been whilst on my own. Go where I want, when I want, and not have to worry about anyone else.
