I'm in joburg with work for the next 2 weeks.
I'll be working from our office in sandton, and will probably be entertained by my colleagues a few times, but I'll otherwise be by myself most of the time. I'm staying in melrose arche.

What do you recommend doing in the evenings after work, and next weekend (which I have free)?

Cheers

trip to Sun City at the weekend? There's a croc farm, elephant rescue thingy and a game park next door as well as a casino and a great water park type jobby

Go shopping in Sandton City mall
Pilanesberg game reserve next door to Sun City (ask the hotel to arrange a day trip) - should be about £60
Visit Montecasino just up the road in Four Ways (big casino complex - like a single Vegas hotel)

I love eating here: http://www.rodizio.co.za/fourways.html (near Montecasino). The Butchers Shop in Mandela Square is also very good.

If it's your first trip I wouldn't suggest driving by yourself. Especially avoid Alexandra, just to the East of Sandton!

Do be careful, very careful. No flashing of expensive watches, cameras, wallet etc. Don't walk outside by yourself at night, and only carefully in the day.

Ask the hotel to arrange collection from the airport - do not get a taxi from there.

Apart from echoing the be careful bit, best bet for the weekend would be to get a cheap flight down to Cape Town. Not kidding either - it's what I used to do when I worked out in Pretoria for a while.

If your co-workers are worth their salt then they will advise and look after you. Happened that way for me. I was put up in the hotel attached to the MonteCasino, which could have been in any country - not very SA. However, things were much nicer once we got down to Cape Town (2 hours flight - SA is much bigger than I had previously realised).

Yes, I saw some dodgy stuff, but I was always 'supervised'. I met some great people out there, pity there is such a mess.

Oh, and don't bother visiting the centre of Joburg itself (called the CBD). Nothing to see, nothing to do, and even greater chance of something going wrong.
