My girlfriend is an airhostess and is stranded in Tbilisi in Georgia. As it seems the ash cloud isn't going to ease any time soon I thought it would be a laugh to drive down there and pick her up or at least spend a few nights with her. Any suggestions on the route I should take and any advice on driving in that part of the world?

...and the car I'll be taking is my £200 daily E34 518 smile

A, The ferrys/trains will be jammed with 50,000 other people who can't fly.

B, You have work on Monday morning.

C, You girl is already drunk, stranded in a hotel, with an all male flight crew and that end-of-the-world-so-lets-live-a-little attitude.

Other than that, go for it. hehe

You'll probably have to go via Turkey - you'd need a visa to cross Russia, and I'm not sure the border would be open after last year!

I think getting all the way to Georgia would be tricky, and full of red tape. Try to get her on a train/plane to Istanbul. Then you can drive to Brindisi (Italy) get the ferry to Igoumenitsa (Greece) then it's about a 600 mile drive to Istanbul. If you put some long hours in it should be doable in 3/4 days. The biggest challenge will be crossing the channel; I would head for less obvious ports, Portsmouth/Poole/Plymouth. I doubt there is much available at Dover at the moment. This sounds like fun; I always love an impromptu unprepared road trip! Can I come? wink

Thanks for the replies, I think you're right, just getting off this island is going to be tricky!

Yep, Bmi is who she works for!

I'd be happy to get ON the island, as we're due to crew change on Thursday in New Orleans, and it isn't looking brilliant for my KLM flight via Amsterdam to Manchester. frown

After much organising, I'm setting off for a wonderful non-stop road trip to London tomorrow night from Istanbul, expecting to get there Friday AM....

Could I stop by and pick her up (only kidding, vehicle is full up!)....

And you plan to cross the channel how?

I just read P&O had hiked foot passenger fares from £10 to £50. Nothing like a bit of extortion and profiteering in a time of crisis, eh?
