Belfast to Birmingham? How soon before the flight?

Depends on the airline but it's usually 40 minutes before the flight that check-in closes.
On a completely unrelated subject, could you not be bothered to just read what it says on your ticket?
It was booked by work, I don't have a ticket, only a copy of the itinerary. Apparently I just have to go to the check in desk and give my name.On a completely unrelated subject, could you not be bothered to just read what it says on your ticket?
But I'm not totally what time I should be there at, I don't want to get really early and have to sit about for more than I have to.
Check your itinerary for a reference number & go to the airlines website. Hopefully you'll be able to check in online, I'm assuming you've got carry on bags?
Ryanair for example will allow you to check in at anytime up to 4 hours before the flight departs. I used to do this on a regular basis when working in Dublin. Then once checked in you can print your boarding card and aim to be at the airport only leaving time to get through security.
I always left half hour at least just to make sure though!

They generally say to get to the airport 2 hours or 3 hours before the flight for European/Global flights, but generally it's just to allow a cushion for people getting stopped at security, delays in traffic etc.
If you can check in online and don't have bags then half an hour or so should be fine at smaller airports. I generally leave it to the very last minute and got to Stanstead for my last flight with about 15 mins to spare and I was the last person on that flight (never been so close without actually missing the flight before)
This strategy does lead to stress and missing flights if anything unexpected happens though. An hour is a happy medium I find.
