Waldorf Astoria or Crowne Plaza Times Square?
Discussion
We stayed in the Crowne plaza a few years ago and it was OK but not that great.
To be honest, it needed updating to bring it back from the 70's. Don't know if this has been done in the last few years.
It did (and still does) advertise itself as one of the only Manhattan hotels to have a swimming pool (which technically it does) but the pool was pretty manky and was restricted use for hotel guests.
You could only use it at certain times of day and even then, the health club users had priority which means that as a hotel guest, you were only alowed in one lane of the pool. strange but true.
Location wise however, you could not get much better as it is bang in the middle of Times Square.

I stayed in the Waldorf with my wife and two teenage sons for a week's stay in NYC in 2005. I'd stay there again if I could. It is one of the world's most famous hotels and now that the Crown Plaza is no longer the Waldorf is probably the hotel to stay in in New York.
If you want a cheap'ish hotel that is right in the middle of the attractions then have a look at The Wellington Hotel (Google it). We've stayed there three times and found it okay.

According to the interweb, the Crowne Plaza has had an $85m renovation, so it might be better now.
Got to be the Waldorf any day of the week, just for the been there done that factor, it's still one of the worlds best known hotels that transends the passage of time. Somethings just have to ticked off the list and the Waldorf is one of them

I have stayed in both.
But have also stayed in the W on Lexington. That would be my choice every time. The whisky blue bar in the hotel is excellent as well.
I'm pretty sure there is also a W in times square as well but I have not stayed there before.
and nice cocktail waitresses too;)But have also stayed in the W on Lexington. That would be my choice every time. The whisky blue bar in the hotel is excellent as well.

The waldorf gets my vote,it`s in need of the rooms smartening but there is always something interesting going on.I have stayed 4 times and we`ve had fake snow, jack nicholson, susan sarendon,a blue goldfish in your room for a film premier always something. The W on lexington is out the back door of the waldorf and it looks good but I don`t know.
