Inspired by Facebook chatter of a friend who's going on a tour to Chernobyl, what is the most unusual place you've been to on holiday?

The best I've done is a visit to Paris catacombs on Valentine's Day. Aren't I a romantic soul?

There's an abandoned touristy place in Crete, that's always looked fun.

Yes, I mean Cyprus. I was thinking of something with regards to Crete, whilst attempting to type 'Cyprus'. Schoolboy error.

There's a strange former leper colony island called Spinalonga on (or next to) Crete. Were you thinking of that?

Mauritius, but not in one of the big resorts. Incredible diversity, but I just couldn't get over Indians speaking French wobble

Never got to that place last summer. Odd though walking through Elounda village to see a fur coat shop.

Out of curiousity: why? To be honest most of what you see is a lot of decaying concrete, an abandoned town and some remediation work - although it should get a lot more interesting in the next few years.

I really couldn't answer that question, I've seen photographs of the place and I am a massive urbex fan. I think maybe because it's so isolated, and I have an interest in abandoned things in general.

Sorry I can't be anymore specific smile

fair enough thumbup

isolated sums it up! it is a bugg*r of a place to get to: even getting there for work requires crossing an international border! just glad I don't have to do it every day as it is a pain in the b*m

back on topic:

Mexican pyramids are quite interesting:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pyramid_of_Chol...
the largest in the world - has a tunnel through it which we walked through, proof that although it mostly looks like a hill, definitely huge pyramid!
