Morning all,

I am in need of a rucksack, a decent one for travelling, I will be using it to live out of for around 2 years. It needs to be durable and hard wearing.

Basically I am asking what your experiences are with yours? I havent really set a budget but obviously the cheaper the better.

I like Lowe Alpine packs.

Well made, durable. They do a vast range so you will find one that's fit for your specific purpose.

You need to think about how you will use it as there probably isn't one that "does it all". Is a frame important (for a dry back)? Are wheels?

A friend of mine bought one recently that was a large bag with wheels and a frame plus shoulder straps and it had a small day-sack that zipped onto the front of the main bag. Looked like an excellent 2-bag solution. I think it may have been North Face, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, I don't really want one with wheels.

I have found this one and it seems to tick all the boxes!

Will you be flying with it?

If so check it will be secure enough: You need to be able to lock the main compartments. You might also want to be able to detach or secure the major straps so they don't get ripped off by baggage handling...and you wouldn't want the daypack coming adrift.

That daypack looks like a great idea though, so you can leave the main pack at the hotel/hostel/tent/wherever.

I also added 1 side pouch (which can also be used as a day sack with the right harness) and the other side I put my roll mat

If you're heading off to South East Asia its worth bearing in mind that you can buy a huge variety of rucksacks and other luggage out there for a fraction of the cost here. Some will be obvious fakes and some will be things that "found" a way out of the factory before being exported. I bought a large NorthFace rucksack in Hanoi for approx. £5 that lasted me round the world and is still servicable now.
