Take some books as there is not a lot to do.

Very much a place for the 40+ with no kids. Lovely place to chill out, and very safe to walk about at night, even in Funchal. Have been 3 times and allways stayed at the Savoy.

Stayed in Canico in '96 on our honeymoon. Lovely people, some great driving roads albeit with a dodgy hire car. Compared with most placs I have visited they really do look after you well. Missed out on the whole toboggan thing as it was too expensive. Good place to relax and unwind.

Its were old people go to die/holiday...

My folks have a timeshare there that has XX years left on it and I was told it if just like that...

Though my thoughts will change if I ever want to borrow it one year.
