So the recession has financially destroyed me so no more villas in Provence or Mark Warner holidays in Greece so I looked at some home soil holidays for one week in August for me and my 3 kids.

Does not matter if it's a mobile home and pitch, Center Parcs, Norfolk Broads boat or buying a big tent and all the equipment and a pitch, I am looking at around £1500 for each option before food and entertainment. Plus no guaranteed sunshine.

Someone suggested a cheap Majorca deal but the thought of trying to fly out of this sth0le during the summer on a package flight is enough to give me palpitations again.

Looks like stay at home and budget £100 a day for trips out.

I hate having to holiday whilst everyone else has to as well.

Last year 5 of us went all inclusive to a Mark Warner, with all day child care and clubs as well as included sailing, wind surfing and other water fun for £3000. It was in September tho'.

Flights are the one that has bent my head, when did they get so expensive?

I used to regularly go across the pond around 10 years ago for £210 cattle.

Just priced up a trip to San Fran for Plottot and I, £2500!

Louis.

This is our holiday villa. We are offering a discount at the moment on remaining weeks.
We are in Tuscany and the sun is shining. There is a private swimming pool too.

Your villa looks fantastic and in the old days I would have gone there in a shot.

Cross Europe in the Boxster with the wife and Grandma bringing the kids by plane. Invite a few friends down as well.

Alas the flights alone would cripple me now.

Cheers tho'.

Northumberland, lots of lovely beaches and castles to explore, take a boat out to see the seals and puffins.

Also think about joining the National Trust or English Heritage. 4 or 5 visits will be more than the cost of a years membership, and you don't feel obliged to spend all day there because you've spent £30 getting in.

Thanks for the kind comments about our villa. Just a quick note that we have now reduced our prices this evening even further. Ryanair fly to Perugia airport Sant'Egidio and that is only 25 mins away from our villa.

If still out of budget then I do hope you find somewhere adequate for you and your family for your summer holiday.

Best

Northumbria is great, nowhere near as busy as places like Lake District, Scotland etc but some really nice places to go

Bamburgh Castle
Mendleston
Alnwick
Brittania Yacht
Holy Island
etc

Gone bloody crazy hasn't it!

All weighed up, we're driving to the Dordogne soon, and renting a cottage. The airlines will eventually shoot themselves in the foot with the prices they're charging.

Not sure about flight prices, but we did an apartment from these guys about 5 years ago which was a very nice place at Golf Del Sur.

Looks like 450 quid for the 2 bed penthouse apartment per week, leaving just over a bag of sand to sort flights. They have bigger apartments and other locations too. Golf del Sur is a very quiet resort on the south coast.

Have you tried budget flights?

Using 14-21 August as a guide, I found flights to Italy (Turin, Milan) for £50pp return on Ryanair. Then arrange your own villa (www.ownersdirect.co.uk) and I'm sure you can reduce your costs.
