Anybody done the Rio carnival?

Thinking about going out to Rio next year for the Carnival.

Has anybody been? Are there any decent mid-budget hotels that you recommend? Is it worth the journey? How long does the main carnival last?

Yes a friend of mine parades every year, I try and go and watch...

I'm not good at hotel recommendations I'm afraid, I have an apartment, but it is definately worth the journey, the main carnival lasts around a week.. There are 2 nights of main parades, ie those in the Special Group (the top 12 Samba schools) but there are also big parades for the group below (Access) and I can never tell the difference... The parade of champions a couple of days later is the most relaxed of the events, and one of the most enjoyable imo...

The safety has improved quite a lot, but it is advisable to watch out, as
with everywhere, as lots of alcohol flows during the week.
