Planning on a week or so in Richmond/Fredericksburg/Charlottesville. Any recommendations for hotels and 'must see' things to do related to the Civil War?

Detour to Gettysburg PA - it's not a major excursion in terms of miles/time and is the Grand-daddy of civil war sites. The guided tours of the battlefield (which is enormous) are very well done and hosted by knowlegeable enthusiasts. I found it to be a memorable experience, having had little previous interest. It motivated me to buy "The Killer Angels", which added a further dimension to the whole conflict.

Colonial Williamsburg is well worth a visit. I went ten years ago and it was very good and, according to a colleague who has visited more recently, it's even better now.

Virginia International Raceway is well worth a visit I'm told - it's a bit like America's Cadwell Park...

A friend of mine from that area lurks on PH from time to time, so maybe he'll pop up and give you the benefit of some local knowledge!

Just a little hijack here, but does anybody know which corner of Richmond is nicest to stay in? Looking for the area with the nice restaurants and a bit of culture, not cement blocks.
