The other half and me are off to NY for my 30th in October for 5 days.

First question is where to stay to be close to all the sites for approx £200pn?

Second question is I intend to propose to my GF while in NY. She wants to take a horse and carriage ride around Central Park so this may be a good time, but if anyone else has any suggestions I am all ears. I have thought top of the Rockefeller / Empire State?

Problem with top of the Empire State is that it will be crowded. You want all those people to witness your proposal?

The carriage idea is better IMO. Or perhaps you could do it over dinner. There's a place that overlooks Central Park IIRC that would be romantic.

Problem with the horse is I don't want the stink of horse guff teasing at our nostrils during the critical moment.

Romantic rather than public please!

Rowing boat + Central Park Lake.

very private, (for New York anyway) and she wont expect a thing....

You can even tease her by visiting Tiffany's on the way there, but just for a 'look' wink

worked for me, this time last year smile

oh yeah, we stayed here for the week.
Hilton Garden Inn, West 35th Street

This http://www.nighthotelny.com/ is a pretty good hotel. Is about 50 metres off the centre of Times Square. Pretty close to some Subway stations to get around and about a 15 minut walk up to Central Park. Prices have probably changed, but we got 6 nights there and flights off Expedia as package for £1700 last year.

Kudos

Done a helicopter ride when we went 5 years ago, down the hudson to Liberty and back up, only 10 mins and was about $100 iirc, but well worth it, we went at dusk and the views were spectacular. Also try do the bus tours as early as poss in your trip because you'll see so many restaurants and places you'll want to visit that you wouldn't think about otherwise, takes about 3-4 hours all round but you can hop on and off. While at Ground Zero, if you've got time and patience, she'll love Century 21.

ETA - Good luck with the proposal...

I have just looked up Century 21 and my heart sank. The consequences of this trip is going to cost me enough god dam it!!! But you are right, she will love it. Anyone in the market for some poorly maintained human organs?

Open top bus tours are a great way to see a city, New York is no exception. Make sure you get a live commentary, I know the guys say the same thing every day, but I don't care, I liked the banter they give out.

For me, the proposal in a rowing boat in the lake would be my choice, but it's such a personal thing you'll need to decide yourself.

Good luck!

Stayed in the Time hotel (http://www.hoteltimenewyork.com/) a few years back and it was pretty decent and a great location.

As for proposal - there are a few bridges by the lake that have great a great setting and aren't massively busy if you don't need to do it in complete privacy.

Might get the leaves turning at that time of year which makes the whole place really beautiful.

Oh, never thought of the Autumn thing. Central Park is looking favourite for question popping then. Not sure about the boat though, knowing my luck I will drop the ring in the pond.

I've been there the last 6 year running, I've seen a lot of proposals. In the middle of the ice skating ring outside the Rockefeller centre. Every cheered etc.

Madison Square Garden on the big screen however this depends if shes into sports.

Central Prak, you really cant go wrong to be honest, nice evening, horse and carriage as you said.

Top of the Empire but you will literally get crushed and it will be in a rush.

My bet would be Central Park!

Nah, its pretty scummy on there tbh, perhaps the other boat tour to Liberty where you pay but i haven't been on that myself. I'd go for central park on the rowing boat...

CP looking the fave.

Neither of us care about sports, and I figured the Empire State will be crazy busy. Just need to pick the right moment between horse farts.

Just been to NYC and there were no more than 10 other people at the top (102nd floor) of the Empire State Building, so it might not be too much of a problem.

The O.P's idea of using the horse & carriage around Central Park is a good one, but get the 40-45 minute tour (around $90) - and not from one of the monkeys with a rickshaw (which should be re-named Riskshaws after the number of crashes I witnessed!)
The longer CP tours show you the famous (not that I can remember their names....) fountains that have appeared on TV or fillum, so you'll get a chance to have a good backdrop too.

Good luck!
