It's a hell of a long way and a lot of it will be quite boring.

Well I will be in the US for 6 months but im planning the trip to take 3 months and then spend the last 3 in florida, Im aware the driving may get quite boring at times but im sure there will be points of interest alon the way! Ive been a passenger in a RV that made a beeline straight to vegas from Florida and see quite a lot of things that i would have liked to stop and looked at further.

I did that trip in 3 days in 2002.
Route was Vegas, Grand Canyon, Hoover dam, Winslow AZ, Witchta Falls TX, Dallas, New Orleans, Gulfport LA, Mobile AL, Tallahassee, Orlando. All in an overloaded work Astro van.
What visa are you using for a 6 month stay? Very tough to get tourist B's these days.

Bloody hell Matt, did you just drive solidly for 15+ hours every day?!

Actually, you are right - it was 4 days. 1st night was in Winslow AZ, 2nd was in Wichita Falls TX and 3rd was Gulfport LA.
It was still tough though and a drive of necessity rather than leisure.
Most of New Mexico and northern Texas is a dull, flat moonscape.

right on!!! do it, it will not be boring!

i did it couple of years back, not the exact trip you did as i was based out of Florida
my plan was to get as many states in as possible in the time I had the car
3500 miles, 10 states in 6 days
broke the speed limit in 9 of those states, got stopped once! (cop cameros are fast, and their guns look so much bigger in real life!)

enjoy it, and take miiiiillions of photos!

Why don't you actually got coast to coast then? Instead of starting in Vegas? and you've got plenty time for it.

I did Albuquerque south on the 25 then took the 10 taking in San Antonio (Austin is nice too), New Orleans (fantastic) , Clearwater then back up and across to Daytona. Its a long run and Texas get a bit the same (especially if you get a caution for speeding 10 miles in and have to behave) but do it and enjoy it .
There is also the white desert in south New Mexico and Cadillac ranch in Amarillo to name a few.

Don't know if you already use it, but head over to www.roadtripamerica.com
You'll get some great ideas and advice and (probably) a request to blog the trip on their site as well.

I blog each US road trip I make there and it's great to read back over my trips when I get home.
