US car hire insurance... What do I need
Discussion
I have done countless miles in the states in rental cars but after deciding to treat myself to something from the Hertz fun collection at the end of the month I decided to read the insurance small print. Having been told a while back the extra/local charges were not needed and I would be covered.
The hertz included insurance doesn’t seem as comprehensive as some of the others – Alamo, Budget etc. Is it just the legal terminology that’s used or are they different?
What do I need to have a car that is insured to cover myself and third parties to avoid an unpleasant bill should I have an accident?

You will need CDW and LDW - this covers you for uninsured losses (ie: you're hit by an uninsured dirver - there are thousands in the US) and everything that normal fully comp insurance covers also.
It will also cover you for loss of rental income and the full replacement cost of the car if it's stolen.
It's up to you if you get PAI, I never bother as my travel insurance covers that side of things.
Be aware that in the US, most US issued credit cards cover the renter insurance wise.... the same is NOT true of UK cards.

CDW and LDW agreed.
Does your travel insurance provide cover in case you are sued by a 3rd party for injury to them. Probably does but on the chance it doesn't then iirc Hertz insurance does not cover this , actually it varies according to State, eg none in California, some basic cover in other states which can be topped up.
However if you take out a prepaid rental booked on .co.uk and prepaid in GBP then LDW and LIS are inclusive in the rate, again I bet it varies acc to the state where car is picked up.
Devil is in the detail, as always.
