Wondered if anybody has ever felt really crap and had several lumps of disapointment thrown their way which has promted something spontaneous. I guess it's easier if you are foot looose and single but im thinking just filling the car up and driving till its empty, either here or heading across the channel, or maybe buying a random cheap flight somewhere totally obscure.

Without wishing to sound needy i just fancy doing this at the minute, really fed up with things. I've got no dependants and i'm self employed with a no work (or ntohting that cant be put off) next week.

Just wondered if any of the PH fraternity has ever just thought "fk it" and dissapeared for a bit.

I'm sure that this is going to sound trite, but if you can go and do some charity work or similar (e.g. working with people or animals), then that can be a real salve for the soul. I ended up working as a home carer for a while - initially just to plug a gap when I was self employed but with nothing coming in, and I found it very rewarding. Going to "work" where people are generally genuinely happy/grateful to see you was really nice, even if what I was doing was pretty menial. It also helps, probably, if you are able to walk away from it if it gets too much of a grind.

Just go. Go to Inverness or the western islands or something. Make a plan for sorting all the problems out on a certain date when you get back and stick to it.

Last time I did this was 18 years ago. Drove until I broke down in Greece. Mechanically!

Just go, I have, some R&R can help loads and put new perspective on things.

Last year I didn't get that far but I picked up a bag, picked up my son said where do you want to go, he said Wales, well we eventually ended up there we just drove stopping at anything interesting, leftlap top at home and turned off phone, lasted nearly 8 days before I needed more clothes and come home, was worth it though.

I tend to just drive if I feel down. There was a time recently when I did this, it gave me chance to mull things over in my mind, away from everyone. I drove home in the end, after hours and hours of just driving nowhere and contemplating. If you feel like getting away for a while, just do it. Be spontaneous, pack a bag and find some solace away from the real world for a while. Good luck, hope things work out.

Shut yourself in The Dorchester for a couple of nights and let them do everything for you.

Did something very similar in May. Myself and a couple mates were feeling a tad fed up with everything so booked a ferry on the Wednesday, left on the Saturday and drove through part of Europe. Went to Brugges, Amsterdam, Dortmund and Colonge. Was only a brief trip but it was epic.

Yes, sure have (both felt that way and buggered off overseas for 10-odd days).
It did me good - forgot all the crap.

I can't see why you can't just book a random flight?

Possibly go and visit someone? Friend or family and spend a few days relaxing?

And go rent a fast car or something biggrin

Learn to ride bikes. Its what any of us do when things become too much - a couple of hours with the wind in your hair and you feel good enough to take on anybody.

Either that or within a couple of hours you can be that far away from problems that they dont matter any more!

Yup. It's why I now live in Swindon and bake wedding cakes and cookies for a living.

Sometimes you just need to do it smile

Go on and go, walk out the door ...

leave on a jetplane, or a plane, train or automobile. Take the little red corvette, or the last train to London, it's just leaving now, or even the last boat to Cairo. Ask the chap for the way to San Jose, or even Amarillo. Keep on walking, ride the horse with no name, take a ticket to ride, in fact every which way but loose.

... Just don't ask for a single ticket to Schunthorpe.

because the next one will be a bottle of mother's little helper.

I live in birmingham and anybody who lives in birmingham would be lying if they said they had never had that thought.
