Where from Baltimore?

I am picking up a friend from Baltimore and we have about 4 days to head off around the 11th of October.
We are looking for a bit of a road trip, walking, cycling maybe getting out on a lake if possible a day in a city.
We have both does the coast Virginia and north Carolina. So am thinking New England – Boston, Cape Cod and surrounding area or Shenandoah – skyline drive/ Blue ridge parkway.
Any views on which would be best do, do not’s must see, and any interesting motels/B&B’s would be fantastic.
