Been 3 times. We love it.

Landing is interesting, last time was more of a controled crash.

Love it too - very relaxing with great food an enough sights to stop it getting too boring.. stayed at the Regency Palace when I went which wouldn't be my personal choice again but was very civilised - and worth noting in true PH fashion for having a classic car bar that had everything from a 360 to a TR4 to a Mk2 Escort with forest arches and even a mint Manta IIRC!...

And yeah, landing is a bit 'hairy' biggrin

visited on a cruise for a day a couple of years ago, so only a day trip but it seemed interesting: we took the cable car from the harbour and then returned downhill on the 'tobogans' - good for a giggle!

On honeymoon 14 years ago. Stayed in Canico (spelling?) rather than Funchal. Loved it.

We also went there on honeymoon (6years ago), and also stayed in Canico. It is a beautiful island. Would definately recommend staying on the south side of the island - but not in Funchal itself - (much more places to visit), but would suggest a day trip drive around the north - some interesting roads and tunnels!! (Beep your horn before going round a tight bend in case there is a truck coming the other way).

Places to go: Monte Palace Gardens, Balcoes walk at Ribeiro Frio, Lavada walk at Rabacal, Pico Ruivo walk (take plenty to drink), Queimadas and Caldeirao Verde walk (torch essential) - the last 2 are both near Santana.

If you are near Canico then would suggest having a meal at the "Inn and Art" (in Canico de Baixo) - great food and great cocktails!
