I would check in online as that will reserve your seat and then go to the counter when you check your bag in and get a printed ticket there.

It helps, but you can just go straight to the bag drop at the airport, provide your passport and you're away.

Or worst case, use the self-check-in machines.

I use Virgin quite a bit and about 50% of the time they reprint the boarding card even if you have it anyway.

Advantage of using it is that you might get a choice of seat (or confirmation of the one you've already got) and you can just go to the bag drop at check-in. In practice "bag-drop" seems pretty well the same as normal chck-in - I guess the fact that you've checked in online means they have all your API but most people have done that anyway.

You have done an ESTA, haven't you?

I haven't used VA online check in but don't they do like others and give you various options on what to do with the boarding card once you've checken in online?

eg email it (so you can print it off later where you do have a printer, eg internet cafe, library?)
or collect at airport, ie use self check in machine?

Bit of a poor show if not

Yep, you can do all those things. If fact for some destinations, and if you're flying from some airports (the two ends aren't linked so it applies all flights to or from certain airports) you can't print the boarding pass anyway.
