CAR HIRE - CANADA

OK can anyone recommend car hire in Canada, Calgary - going for a few weeks and wanted to check it all out really.. After small 4x4 - getting quotes of $1600 - 1200 quid for 2 weeks...

Need the obvious extra cover as dont fancy forking out large excess's..

Try looking on http://www.travelsupermarket.com for a comparison.

Then find the cheapest and make sure you claim Quidco cashback.

That should work out at about £500 net of cashback for the two weeks.

I hire cars in Vancouver a couple of times a year for two weeks. I usually use Kayak to find the cheapest quote, then double check the insurance package. It sometimes takes a few goes to find something acceptable, but in August I got a Jeep Patriot from Alamo for c. £750. A deeply uninteresting car but it did the job.

Try Canadian Affair - based in the UK, specialise in packages but will do car-hire only for a small fee.

Their customer-service isn't perfect, but they do what they advertise, they use the big-name companies, and the guarantee a free 1-step upgrade (e.g. intermediate to full-size). Plus they were the only ones that we found that didn't want to charge a fortune for one-way hire fees. It also avoids all the hard-sell at the other end where they try and hit you for 10 different insurances (well, Hertz tried...).

We've travelled to BC every year for the last fifteen years or so and hire a 4x4 each time, always shop around and normally find Canadian Affair to be the cheapest. Occasionally someone like Car Hire 3000 might beat them.

Also used Canadian Affair in the past - no problems.

Be careful though they have some weird deals over there with respect to mileage. Make sure you get unlimited if you're likely to wander.
