SouthWest buys AirTran - Noooooooooo!!
Discussion
Dammit, dammit and thrice dammit.
My work requires me to average 6 domestic flights in the US, covering around 4000 miles each week.
Maintenance averse SouthWest Airlines, my most hated US domestic carrier is poised to swallow-up AirTran, my most favorite and beloved discount operator.
Goodbye generous A+ Rewards program and dirt-cheap upgrades, clean, well cared-for aircraft and courteous staff.
Hello to being treated like inanimate cargo, no seat assignment, no business class, paying for a bag of f
king crisps, horrible, horrible delays and hung-over pilots.
Screw that, I'm going back to marginally less hideous Delta.

Ooh, good luck.
We just flew with Air Canada (who apparently won some best North American airline award this year, which after the domestic flight worried me somewhat). Flew trans-atlantic and domestic, and the trans-atlantic wasn't bad, to be fair. Would probably use them again if the only alternative is BA.
...but domestic resembled the budget and charter airlines in the UK (OK, maybe not as bad as RyanAir). And the stewardesses had zero interest in addressing any of my problems.
So if they're the best, I dread to think that the mid-pack are like...

Somehow I suspect that Air Canada will not be considered a US domestic carrier, for quality ranking purposes (although it should be).
Supposedly, Virgin USA are the hot sh!t - but that ignores the fact that they fly to/from about 5 destinations, so in the real world, are a po-dunk player.
My primary objection to SouthWest is that they keep getting busted for failing to carry out routine maintenance on their aircraft. It's great that your bags fly free with them, but slightly less attractive if that flight is vertical and in a downward direction.
