Dubai airport - near miss?

I wouldn't think so. Potentially disastrous runway incursions (where an aircraft or vehicle enters the runway without clearance) are pretty rare, although if it's too late to stop or go around then the conclusion is fairly inevitable. It's more likely that the traffic ahead of you was a bit slow getting off the runway or missed the turnoff, meaning that you were sent around by ATC. Not a big deal, happens many times a week at big airports. Edited by bennyboydurham on Friday 1st October 14:27

Can often just be the previous landing ac not turned off the run way at the correct point, maybe landed a bit long and missed it's early high speed trun off. Even if it is right down the other end, if it is not clear of the runway, they wont give you the clearance to land, (although some airports can use a "landafter" instruction nowadays.
So could have been lots of things, but a "go around" nowadays is not that uncommon. Maybe a couple a month at an average airport, more at the busier ones maybe?
I've flown around the world for 15 years and been in three go arounds, mostly undramatic.

I had something similar landing at Heathrow a while back - "go around". We were very close to landing when the jets wound back up to full and some fairly swift turning took place. The captain made an announcement to say that with the traffic levels, this happens pretty much once a day at Heathrow. (planes not being completely clear of the runway ahead), and that it was unfortunately our turn today.
He also said if the next time it happened, he'd be having "choice words" with the pilot in front. Which successfully broke the tension on board.
It was a fairly scary, if exciting moment; I'd not felt a plane power back up into the sky that fast before.

It happened to me coming into Liverpool airport last year and I thought it was quite fun although the missus was less than impressed as she's not the best flyer.
I did have an interesting one flying to Budapest earlier this year. About midway through the flight I glanced up from my book and noticed that the plane was banking quite sharply. I looked out of the window and once we'd got level another plane came by close enough for me to recognise the tail flash as being an Emirates flight. We then banked sharply to the right as if to get back on course and that was that. I did wonder whether that was classed as a near miss but I guess I'll never know.

It's happeend to me at a couple of times (once and Hetharow and once at La Guardia)........didn't particularly bother me - was listening to ATC both times so heard what was going on.....
Were you a passenger? How did you manage to listen to ATC?About 3 years ago we were about to take off from Dubai, actually queing up along the taxiway and the pilot comes on the PA, 'sorry folks looks like the shaiks having an airshow, we'll have to wait until they finish'! 2/5hrs later we were away! Made the normal 6hr flight 2.5hrs longer!
Had a go-around coming in to land at Heathrow a while back. With no warning the pilot suddenly gave it full beans and banked up and away. Once he had sorted himself out he announced that the plane in front had announced an emergency so we had to abort our landing.
Scared the crap out of me and everyone else on the plane (judging by the silence as we banked sharply to the right with no warning whilst on final approach)

Had one landing in thick fog at CDG and the pilot mentioned too much traffic. Went around and then appeared to land on a different runway (Church spire sticking through the fog was in a different place the second time around).
Wondered if the traffic comment was because he was trying to land on the autoroute.

Sitting opposite the stewardess - she was far worried than we were.
Also had an emergency landing when the bloke in the seat ahead of us had a heart attack.
Not very dramatic - plane didn't have time to dump its fuel so we were very heavy which seemed to be the problem- fire engines and all that...... then a long wait while they checked everything out before setting off again.
