We are going to NY on the 16th and are unsure of the options for transfer between JFK and manhattan in bound and Newark return.

I expect it to be very expensive and I also know that from past experience NY taxi drivers seem quite intimidating.

Has anyone on this forum got any advice?? Much appreciated...

Just grab a cab from outside the terminal. $50 (+ tolls) to anywhere in Manhattan fixed price. You may have to queue a while, depending on which flight you get in on. Takes around 30-45 minutes depending on where you're going, and traffic, obviously.
There are plenty of limos cruising around offering rides in, but I don't know how much they charge.

I work in New York a lot (though mainly via La Guardia, rather than JFK), but I haven't encountered any fixed-price cab fares. Week before last, I cabbed it from JFK to the Chrysler Building on Lex Ave, late morning. The wait outside the terminal was around 10 minutes and the fare was $28 + toll.
All city vehicles have a GPS map system in the back, so you can see where you are headed and you can pay with a credit card in any of them too.
Getting out of the city can be a little more tricky. Avoid 4.00pm-4.30pm, as this is when a lot of shift changes occur and getting a cab around this time can be very difficult. Your hotel should be able to have a car for you at any time - another tactic is to enter a large hotel lobby, then walk out again and have the concierge staff hail a car for you.
City to Newark is more like $50+, I think.

I did La Guardia to Newark a couple of weeks ago, there's an Airport Bus service - $21 -, you change in central Manhatten at Grand Central Station, took about 90mins in total. There's also a JFK to Grand Central too, the price is about the same.

Going back look into the airport transfers from your hotel, they are probably best placed to tell you what time you need picking up to make check in and your flight.

It's been like this the last five years that I've been travelling through JFK. PLenty more info in the link.

There may well be cheaper ways of getting to your destination, but this has to be the quickest and most trouble free, especially if you don't know where you're going.

Was in NY a few days ago.

Picked up the shuttle bus from right outside JFK terminal (8) to Grand Central, and then another shuttle to Penn Station (for a five minute walk to our hotel). IIRC, cost per person was $15 ($27 return).

Edit - these people.

The last time I had to get from JFK to Manhattan, the hotel receptionist said that by far easiest way, for someone unfamiliar with the area, was to get a cab. A cab was duly called and the 40 minute ride cost about $60 including tip. The return trip from the city to the hotel was about the same in a yellow cab.

The following day, the train to Penn Station was a lot cheaper and quicker.

I travel in/out of Newark at least twice a month - have done it hundreds of times.

Your travel options to Newark depend on a couple of things - time of day and how much luggage you have.

For ease and convenience I always book a car/limo from these guys: http://www.carmellimo.com - midtown to newark is $43 + tolls ($11) + tip - so you're looking about the $60-65 all-in. Always on time, comfortable cars, drivers good (mostly). Always my "go-to" option.

Only problem with that is time of day - try and get to Newark at 5pm and you're in the tunnel traffic - could be a VERY long journey. Time it so you're hitting the tunnel by about 4pm and its 40mins tops.

Other options are the train/PATH. Basically you can take the NJ Transit train from Penn Station (32nd St/8th ave) - costs about $17 one way. Alternatively get the PATH ($1 I think) from 14th st or downtown at the WTC - take it to Newark Penn Station and transfer for about $10 to NJ Transit for the 2 min ride to Newark. Either way you have to get the airtrain at Newark Airport, which can take quite a while itself. All in you're going to need an hour to get to the terminal. Its a complete pain with luggage as there's no space for it and you get hassled by the conductors to get it into the overhead rack...which if its a 30kg case isn't easy.

Yellow cabs - I'd avoid for airport runs....price is random (certainly more than a limo service like above, driving is scary and they are uncomfortable.

I don't do JFK, but carmel will do it also - get off the plane, collect your bag and call them - they'll pick you up in 5 minutes and drop you at your hotel.

What? At 3.00am maybe. It often takes more than 20 mins to get through the Holland Tunnel.
