I have been here many times, long walks, good pub, and mobile phone reception is rubbish.

if you book far enough ahead you can get one of the rooms facing the walled garden, they each have an outdoor private spa

even still, the attic rooms are great - having a bath in the lounge is rather novel

while bust on your travel distance - its about 3hrs from you.
But have a look at Portmeirion.

Stunning location. lots of Portmeirion owned land to walk around - not just the village, but also the woods and coast land around the village. plus you are by Snowdonia, so lots of quiet walking locations to choose from.

You have a choice of staying in the hotel building, on the estury front, in the Castell behind the village, or staying in one of the many village cottages (either as a hotel guest, or in a self catering cottage)

of those cottages in the village, many have their own private patios, which are away from the general public during the day time.
my personal favorate is The Watch House, which is part of the hotel, rather than a Self Catering. you get your own private patio (with your own cannons to protect you from invaders wink ), a huge bed, large bathroom, bigish bath (sorry no jacuzzi)

of the self catering, outside the village you have Deudraeth Cottage:

and Dorlan Goch
http://www.portmeirion-village.com/content.php?nID...

both have real fires, are away from the village, so very private.

There are winter break prices on at the moment for November - from £75 per night (sunday to thurs) for 2, including breakfast either in the hotel, or the Castell, or slightly more to have dinner in the hotel or Castell included in your price.

whether you book in as a hotel guest, or self catering, you can make reservations at either the hotel or Castell for meals. there is also free concierge service to drive you to and from your cottage to your meal reservation.

Portmeirion is a great call. More character than you can shake a stick at. Visited the village numerous times. Not stayed, though, but with lord summerisle's recommendation...

...and out of season there won't be so many grockles wandering about during the day..

Alternative suggestion. There are some great places in the Cotswolds in the English Country Cottages portfolio and you can order home delivery pre-prepared dishes from a number of different cooks, so all you have to do is warm them up.

Took the GF there earlier this year for a couple of days for her 30th, it's absolutely stunning. Nic's a bit of a Tudor history fan, so I had us booked into the Duke's Bedchamber. I scored massively on the Brownie Points scale wink

Never been to the above but certainly plan to, I heard of this place through EVO magazine as it's where they stay when in Wales. Check out the links to 'Fourteen' and 'The High Cabin', both have hot tubs for the Lady smile

Tell her to head for the mountains, pocket the cash, buy yourself a crate of stella, head down the red light district with £20 and get yourself a bit of sludge.

We spent a couple of nights in the Cotswolds back in August - literally on our doorstep, so fancied somewhere we had not been before.

Some good suggestions - thanks. I have found this place

http://www.yorebridgehouse.co.uk/

Country house hotel, room with private terrace and hot tub and great food. A little further out then initially planned, but given that we are staying for 5 nights a little extra time on the journey wasn't a major issue. Even better, there appears to be some good roads around the hotel - so whilst Missy is having a spa treatment I can head out for a play.
