Hi all,

Just want some advice, I will be going to france for a few days soon and was wondering if anyone knows if jewelery, particularly a white gold/diamond engagaement ring is likely to be any cheaper over there as opposed to here.

Are there any other pro's or con's to buying abroad? One I can think of is that I don't speak french and don't want to end up being flogged a plastic one!

Thanks in advance!

No expert on frog tomfoolery but would have thought (given the exchange rate) most things on the continent would be more expensive

I wouldnt have said so, in my expearience France tends to be more expensive than the UK for jewelery and watches.

if you need an engagement ring, contact Howard (nightmare) on Pistonheads. I and many other PHers have used him. The service is excellent and you'll get a very good price. I got a top quality custom made ring for a great price. Can't recommend him enough.

Many years ago I served my apprenticeship in Hatton Garden manufacturing various items of jewellery, we also used to buy semi finished items from a company in France, we had loads of problems with the stuff being below the required gold content to pass the UK assay tests. Whilst I sure that this is not the case with all French jewellery, it kind of sows a seed of doubt

Gold is necessary 18 carat in France. Which is not the case everywhere in Europe. Italy can sell 9 carat stuff for exemple and I think the situation is similar in the UK, isn't it?
