Best way to travel between cities - Italy
Discussion
Hi,
Off to Italy next week with Mrs Jags for our anniversary. Staying 2 nights each in Milan, Rome and Venice (in that order).
The flights in and out of Italy have been sorted, but need to figure out the most efficient way of travelling from Milan to Rome and then from Rome to Venice.
What are the best options? Would want to avoid driving myself (Just can't be bothered to be honest). I'm guessing rail is the next option (or air?). Are there any cheap(ish) rail passes that can be had which permit unlimited travel, or do I need to book specified trains?
Thanks

My wife and I went to Venice, then Florence and last of all Rome last year for 3 days in each city. We flew to Venice then took a train to Florence and another train to Rome 3 days later.
Venice to Florence was Euros 97 for 2 tickets first class and Florence to Rome was Euros 102.60 first class again. Both journeys were interesting and it was a good way to see the countryside.
I would recommend first class, the second class carriages were much fuller and there was not really enough space for luggage whereas first class was roomier and there was plenty of space for luggage. Take a look at trenitalia.com to see prices, times and seat reservation procedures.
We also pre-booked tickets (and times) for the Uffizi Gallery in Florence and the Vatican museum in Rome. This saved loads of time and queuing.
Given the time needed for security and early check in for flights I reckon our train journeys were as quick overall as flying would have been.

Word of warning:
If using a car watch out for Restricted Zones where simply driving past the camera will cost you 120 euros a go.
The signes are in Italian, the hire companys dont warn you (as they make 50 euros a go out of them)
and the more times you pass the more it costs
Echo this. Only found out about two months after getting back from Florence If using a car watch out for Restricted Zones where simply driving past the camera will cost you 120 euros a go.
