We're off to the continent on Friday to stock up on ciggies and wine.

The tobacco part is sorted: going just over the border to a warehouse in Belgium for them. I'm still unsure about the best place to go near Calais for wine, though.

Advice / links appreciated thumbup

Cheers

Someone told me that a lot of those big cheap wine places, like eastenders have dissappeared now.

We went to france in the summer and picked up some very drinkable plonk for a couple of euro's a time - the locals seemed to be buying so we jumped in

The weak pound and ever rising prices means it isn't so easy now. My advice? Go to Auchan just north of cite Europe and hope they're doing tastings!

Used to go there (Eastenders) once a month about 10 years ago.
Stopped in there last year on a cross channel jaunt and it was half the place it used to be, empty aisles, nothing like as much stock and prices that weren't too much different to the Auchan down the road.
If they have gone under I'm not really surprised although it a shame.

Normally just pile into City Europe.

Let me know how you get on though as I'm going over 17th for exactly the same reasons.

Thanks, people thumbup

The plan is Adinkerke first for the ciggies, then Cite Europe for the vino.

There's only Carrefour left in the Cite Europe now as Tesco has shut, Franglais (near the Eurostar station at Frethun near the Tunnel) is probably the best for tasting wine before you buy. The shop at the Terminal Building usually has some decent offers on too.

That's what we do, although we usually go to Pidou.

As ciggies have gone up in price in France, how much cheaper is Belgium? And where do you go to get good deals on brands like marlboro?
thanks

Bloody long day, that was hehe

Sparing the details of M25 & M40 misery on the return leg, it was a pretty successful little jaunt.

Getting to Adinkerke was easy: half an hour from the docks just over the Belgian border with plenty of parking outside a shop about the size of a Little Chef. Neither the wine nor spirits were any cheaper than Blighty, but if (like me) you collect branded beer glasses boxedin then you'll love it. Lots of Belgian beers on sale at reasonable prices available with the matching glass. My collection dictates no more room for further additions, but I picked up a case of 6 obscure Belgian ales (ranging from 6 to 10.5 volts) for just over £5. Ciggie-wise, I bought 1,000 of my preferred brand, mrs k 600. The staff were friendly, and spoke excellent English (which is nice, as my Flemish is non-existent).

From there, we scarpered to Cite Europe about 3/4 of an hour drive down the A16. Off at J43 and followed the signs. Again, easy to find and get to with loads of parking. The Carrefour was about 5 mins walk from Entrance 6, with the wine section three quarters of the way down the store on the left as you face it.

Now, all we were looking for were cheap, drinkable, everyday wines. We know they're out there, as recent trips to Italy resulted in a boot full of 5 litre boxes of very quaffable vino di tavola for about 8-9 Euro a pop. Our usual one over here is a Spanish job for £12.99 per 3-litre box. We walked out with 25 litres in 5 litre boxes; a combination of red and rose.

The important bit, of course, is the maths.

The goods we purchased amounted to Euro 368 or £324

The same stuff here would have cost £523

Needless to say, we'll be doing this now on a regular basis yes

Fortunately I'm only 30 minutes form the Channel Tunnel and I managed to get a deal on my crossing for £20 return.

If I don't bother going to Adinkerke for cigarettes I can do a round trip in under six hours. Really ought to go more often.

200 Marlboro Red were, I think, the equivalent of £39.00.

Also, the 'trick' with Belgian ciggies is that you have to pay cash in Sterling, as they, in theory, can't discount from the Euro RRP but they can offer a favourable exchange rate instead for cash transactions. (card transaction's exchange rates are controlled by the bank).

Good point.

We didn't know any better and, as their website stated Euro / GBP / Cards accepted, we paid using a debit card. Next time we'll pay with Euros.
