This year, flew gatwick - bangkok (via dubai) for 480 sheets - cheapest flights I can find for next year (feb / march, so same time of year) is 650.

Is this just the exchange rare, or is Thai more popular now it's slightly more moody politically?

There are cheaper flights around if you look for them, but flights are going up as the air taxes are going up at the moment.

Cost me £500 each way in january 2009 gonna be more next time because of the new tax on long distance air travel, and the fact i'll be taking the wife next time.

I've heard it's cheaper to fly to Amsterdam then get a flight to Bangkok as the dutch and other EU countrys do not have this long distance flight tax.

You can try that.
Both Thai and EVA fly direct from AMS to BKK.
Not sure about KLM, but they probably do.

Try EVA out of LHR - normally very competative.

I went quatar airways in 2009 they were the cheapest then, with a 1 hour stop in Doha on the way there and an 8 hour stop on the way back, and all drinks are freebiggrin

At the moment, Quatar airlines seem to have vast connection times (12h ish), Air india is cheap, but sounds like it's a pretty horrible way to go on holiday (unreliable, bad food, no entertainment, poor service etc). Kingfisher is an option, as is fly to Paris and on, or Schipol and on, for a tad more money. Etihad have a couple out of LHR, and I think wor lass has found a manchester - BKK (via god knows), but she's waiting on a reply from the website.
Checking out EVA, Air China, and their ilk tonight..
(why can't Manchester be a bigger airport, last time the drive from Gatwich - home with huge jet lag was hell)

But what a boring airport DOHA is!

Direct with EVA can often be found at £470 off-season.

In terms of direct LHR-BKK, EVA is cheapest. No question.
For direct flights LHR-BKK, you only have Thai, BA/Qantas and EVA to choose from.

Hope you weren't thinking of going to Samui?
The place is under water. No air in or out, no ferries, no power and flood water everywhere!

Didn't realise it and the other islands were flooded. Shame, as it was fine just over a week ago.

Both Emirates and Etihad go from Manchester, with Emirates you can even do it on the A380 all the way. Connection times are ok though late at night in Dubai.

Air Asia will be cheapest, but you'll have to find a connection. Wont be much over 450 notes I wouldnt have thought? UK-Malaysia cost me £360 last month, another £150 got me to Oz, so a short hop from KL-Thailand wont be more than a tonne.

EDIT; just had a look, KL-Thai is 170 Ringitts, which is about £40? Whole lot should be possible for around £400.
