Me and a mate are looking to go to the Far East in Summer 2011. Probably June. Due to work commitments, the most we can do is 14 days away (10 work days holiday). Aiming to see 3 countries, more if possible, even if just briefly.

Shortlist countires are:-

Vietnam, Cambodia, Loas, China, Japan. No real pull to Thailand for either of us.

Other than that, we are open to suggestions. We have got no idea the best way to structure the trip and / or how to get around, although due to the short trip, probably flights.

Budget is flexible but £2,000 all in (including flights) is probably the maximum.

Thanks,

Out of those choices I'd go for Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos given the short time available.

You could take an organised tour with someone like Gap Adventures which uses local transport, but sticks to a tight schedule and usually has decent accommodation.

If you want to go independently then you can get around by bus/train or very short local flights if you want to spend more time in each destination. Look at www.seat61.com for more info on the trains/buses. Airasia.com is probably the best place for the cheapo flights.

I could list hundreds of places to visit in those countries and the others on your list so fire away with any questions smile

What is your objectives??

Temples, culture, scenery, beaches, gogo bars?

What do you want out of the trip, a relaxing time or some full on culture exposure?

Phumy has put up a great travel itenary on Vietnam in the Asia forum that is worth a look too.

Be carefull that with that short scedule you dont spend all the time traveling and none of it seeing and experiancing.

Seem to have missed off Malaysia and Indonesia? On a budget, Cambodia and Laos will be cheapest, followed by Vietnam.

Japan is nowhere near SE Asia and is forking expensive.

I'd do KL, then across to Laos, Cambodia (Siem Reap) then into Vietnam, up Vietnam from HCM to Hanoi, and then either back via KL or HK. Should be enough for 2 weeks.

One of my buddies is coming out to see me as part of a 2 week holiday - I'll try and find out his itinerary and how he found it.

One word of warning - watch out for the yellow fever. There is no known cure.

You certainly can't get tablets at the doctors!

....and back on topic rofl
A few must see places IMO are Angkor Wat, Halong Bay, Luang Prabang (and the remote areas North of there preferably by motorbike), Hoi An and as many local street food vendors as you can find smile

No that's just nob rot that you are thinking of, a nasty side effect of yellow fever, especially if you are suffering in places like pattaya hehe
