Hello all,

We are flying to New York in 2 weeks time.
Arriving at Newark.

However, I have no idea at all, where to look for a hotel in New York.
I only know about Manhatten and Broardway.
What area should I be looking for to book a hotel?

We stayed in the New Yorker a few weeks back and had no complaints - 2 minutes from Madison Square Garden and about a 10 minute walk from Times Square.

I haven't been to NYC although I'm going there next month for New Years, so have been in (and still am in) the whole 'Cripes, where's where and what's decent?!' routine. From my research I understand Times Square is to be avoided. I'm staying in between Bryant Park and Grand Central Station at a hotel called The Library.

My advise once you've got an idea of rough location is to hit Trip Advisor and check out the hotel reviews. Also, I'm sure someone will come along who's been numerous times before, and can offer far better advice than I.

Make sure you book something: I was almost refused entry once for not having anything booked! (West coast arrival.)
Where are you staying?
No idea. I've got a hire car booked and we'll stop when we get tired and find a motel.
Can't let you in without a pre-booked place to stay for your first night.
Can I borrow your phone?
No.
Well, you'll have to deport me then.

Total sense of humour failure on their part and they eventually let me in. Bunch of 'tards

I've been 6 times and taking my daughter in early January (again) as an alternative to the school ski trip as this trip costs less!!! That is until I get to 5th Ave

Last year we stayed in the Thirty-Thirty - compact rooms but clean and tidy enough for a short stay due to very limited wardrobe space. 10mins walk from Grand Central and round the corner from Empire State.

Dont worry about locations on Manhattan as the metro is a breeze.

Trip Advisor is a good place to start for reviews but be mindful even 'top' hotels in Manhattan will not be of the same standard expected in other major cities. Also if you are booking the flight and hotel package individually you will not get the best room rate. Fortunatley last year I booked the package as my flight got cancelled due to snow but got a full refund and rescheduled.

There is a Best (or Great) Western near to Newark that is probably the cheapest hotel - free breakfast and free shuttle to and from Manhattan hourly. I was tempted to book this beacuse of the extras it provided but got a good deal in Manhattan instead. A hotel is only a room to rest/sleep if you plan the trip correctly.

If you have not been before, it's probably worth staying around Times Square. You are central and have good subway connections. First time I went I walked near enough everywhere from Times Square.
I prefer to stay around East Village now though as the nightlife is better.

ETA Was considering a week myself on the 17th. Cheap flight at £330 but not sure of flying back the day before Thanksgiving.

OP

What's your budget per night (I assume you're looking for a double room?)

I would concur that staying somewhere mid-town Manhattan will be your best bet.... you're central to most of the tourist stuff and close to the subway network (which is by far the best way to get around NYC)

I've been there 6 times now so if you need some hints on what to do.........

When I'm flush, we stay at the Mercer in Soho, but when I'm not (i.e pretty much allways!) we stay at the Holiday Inn on Lafayette. It's between Soho (bottom end of Broadway), China Town, Little Italy and a relatively easy walk to lots of other great places (Village, Ground Zero, Brooklyn Bridge, City hall, Wal Street, Battery Park, etc, etc).

I much prefer to be in the lower part of the island - I just think the atmosphere there is better. I don't like mid-town much, and Times Square IMO is 'orrible.

The Holiday Inn is a good compromise between cost and quality (4*) and in a great location.

I have been a few times and earlier this year I stayed at the Crowne Plaza Times Square. Got to say I was surprised-people go on about not staying near Times Square because its too busy, but I say its agood place to stya. You are very central, excellent transport links, easy walk to Intrepid and Circle Line Cruises (which by the way, is no doubt THE best trip you can do-the 3 and 1/2 hour one)and just made you feel the magic of NY. It wasnt noisey either in the room. It was newley refurbed, great services and the staff were cool too.

It cost us £275 a night for a family room, and was really worth it.

For comparison I stayed in the Waldorf before, and I reckon the CP was easily as good and the rooms nicer.

Went for the first time at the end of September and stayed a couple of mins walk from Times Square. Not sure why people suggest not to stay round there as, as he been said already, it's very central. Didn't feel unsafe there at all. If it is your first time, I would say go midtown.

That said, I can see the merits of staying a bit further south - we had a great Sunday just wandering up from Staten Island, through Wall St, Ground Zero and then up to Soho/Greenwich Village etc etc and up as far as the Empire State, from where we watched the sunset on the 102nd floor.

It's a great place. Make sure you walk everywhere as you'll see so much more.

There are people on here with a far greater knowledge of the place, but it's all pretty fresh in my mind at the moment and we did all the touristy things, so if you need to know anything, ask away.

Doubt you'll be staying in Manhattan then unless in a hostel.

We are going in a few weeks as well but couldn't believe how expensive hotels have become. Asking the holiday bods at work it seems that NYC lost a huge number of rooms over the last couple of years and this has meant the ones left can charge what they like. Typically we were looking at $300 a night which is way too steep for a week.

In the end we rented an appartment for about $180.
We prefer the lower east side or soho for the eating and drinking opportunities using the metro to go uptown for the sights.

60 Thompson is nice and the restaurant is great but $100 a night won't get 2 of you dinner let alone a room.

Doubt you'll be staying in Manhattan then, unless on a bench in Central Park.
