NYC on NYE. What to do?

So I arrive in New York on Dec 29th. There till Jan 3rd. Got plans to do the sights and what not. Also have a few plans for restaurants (River Cafe etc).
BUT...what to do on NYE? Don't fancy standing around amongst the crowds in the freezing cold in Times Square. What else can people recommend for a good NYE in NYC?

Totally depends on what sort of person you are. One man's meat etc. If it was me, I'd be heading here...

...but you may hate it. For me, it's my favorite bar anywhere, and will be heading back in 3 weeks time. Rough as you like, but the friendliest bar I've ever been in.
