Probably been asked a million times, but....

Off to Australia December and USA January. Passport expires September 2011.

Will I need to renew prior?

No. You have more than 6 months until your passport expires so you will be alright for both countries. Some countries insist that you have at least 3 months left until a passport expires but I don't believe Australia and the USA do.

Don't bother, you'd need new visas / visa waivers.

Well both of them are just filling in a web page so it's not onerous. But the real answer is that there is no need because there is plenty of time left on the existing passport

I was just saying as loads of people are trying to fly on ESTAs forgetting that they've got a new passport. It's a godsend when dealing with oversold flights, apparently. They've started charging for ESTAs now too.
