Guide to gambling in Las Vegas?
Discussion
Ok so I'm a Vegas newbie and am going with some friends for the first time. Trying to read as much about Vegas as possible.
While casinos is not the highest on my agenda I do plan to dabble a little. I have set myself a max I will sepnd in one day and wont go over.
So can anyone give me some pointers. Not looking for gambling tips per se but more the differnt types of games and ettiquette while playing etc.
A lot of people go on about video poker and and slots?

We went for a week on honeymoon and only played at the casino. We had $20 on roulette, the rest we just spent on the slots. Found it better to play max bets on smaller credits than 1 or 2 lines at a higher credit. My favourites were the 25 lines, 3 reels, 5c a line - so only £1.25 a spin. Free drinks while you play, you won't come home bankrupt and you'll be surprised at how often you win.
Machines are boring imo.
Half the fun is playing the table games and talking to the other players from around the US or world.
Blackjack - don't play the last box unless you know what you're doing otherwise you'll people will get frustrated that you've messed the game up for the table.

Sorry but what do you mean by lines reels etc?Slot machines in vegas are different to the ones here.
Most machines are standard 3 reels and if you get 3 winning symbols you win. However instead of just having 1 winning line you can play at different multiples up to 21 lines.
So a 1cent machine will cost you 1cent if you play 1 line per spin. If you want to play all lines (diagnals etc) it will cost you 21cents a go.
Then you get the option of playing up to 5 times a line. So 21 lines will cost you a dollar and 5 cents a spin (5 x 21 lines).
Does that make sense?
You will understand when you see them.
Just don't go on the 5 dollar machine and play max lines and max bet, it will cost you about $300 a spin.
Stick to the 1cent machines, play max lines and you can play for hours, have free drinks and won't spend much (if that's your goal)

I was a Vegas, gambling and casino newbie when I stayed in the MGM for a week last year.
A few tips:
Be sober the first time... it's a lot easier to pay attention to what's going on around you without a skinful
Walk around the casino floor a few times to see what games are in operation (for example in MGM There may be 20 blackjack tables, but some will have a $10 minimum, some $100. In general the minimums go up the later it gets.
You will get comped drinks, the higher rolling your table the more often you'll get service. At least a $1 tip to the waitress per drink, more and you'll get served more often.
If you have a decent win or a good run of luck it's customary to either tip the dealer or place a second bet alongside yours "for the dealer".
If you have the time, some casinos run beginners schools, these are well worth the couple of hours.
Above all else, set yourself a limit and don't breach it.
Also, once you've spent your money, head into New York, New York and go to the Times Square bar for the duelling pianos... they're worth seeing.

The slots are ok if you want almost free drinks.. Sit near the tables in a busy area and play 1c games until the waitress comes round..Yes you get free drinks at the tables and you do get them more often but unless you go to the less glamourous casinos off the strip you will struggle to find any tables with less than a $10 minimum.
Only play table games that you fully understand or you will lose alot of money very fast. I spent a while trying to work out craps but had no idea what was going on.

This was one of our favourite/luckiest types of slot. 3 reels, 5 possible winning lines (3 horizontal, 2 diagonals). 5c per credit so playing max bet puts 5c on each line, 25c per spin. I was about $5 in when that ^^ came up. 3 double BAR would've paid 20 credits ($1), but the 2 X10 symbols turned it into $100. It was only when I was looking through my photos when we got back that I saw how close I was to $1k! The machines don't pay out cash, but print out a barcode which you then either take to the desk or a seperate machine to cash. We consistently won between $20 and $50 on these, and reckon overall we were probably about evens over the course of the week.
We spent a lot of time at a craps table in the Bellagio chatting to the croupier who was more than happy to explain the game and how it all worked.
What really impressed me was that we were treated exactly the same as guys who were playing with 10k chips.
You could do a lot worse than doing the same, chatting to the staff and seeing if you can pick up some tips.
We won big as it happens, left Vegas in the black with $1.50 and a pink fluffy gonk.
