Places for a weekend away in England
Discussion
Every now and then, we manage to offload the children onto their grandparents and get a weekend to ourselves, which is generally very pleasant.
Question is, where might be nice to go for the next one?
Places to rule out include London (work there, live 30 minutes away, so whilst I love the place, it's nothing new) and Oxford (as I don't want to offload the kids just to have to meet up with the MIL).
Other than that, anywhere within a reasonable distance from the M3/M4 is good. We live in Surrey and the grandparents live in Somerset, so anywhere between and up/down a bit is fine.
The destination doesn't have to be a world heritage site or anything. Just somewhere attractive and relaxing with reasonable restaurants, shops & entertainment (cinema etc - guess how often we get to do that with kids of 7, 5 & 2).
Do you live somewhere that tends to cause first time visitors to express surprise at how unexpectedly nice it is? That's the sort of place I'm looking for!

Edge of Costwolds. Few shops in Swindon if it floats your boat, good food relaxing setting.
