2 days of delay from Heathrow results in my family being offered flights on the 4th Jan.

More than 2 weeks later. On their scheduled return date?

That means they won't be able to bring all of my Christmas presents. I'm going to write to the Mail on Sunday.

Anyone else been fobbed off with silly re-booking offers or just my Mother?

When me and the missus got stuck in San Francisco during the ash-cloud debacle, our VA flight back on April 22 was initially pushed back to the beginning of June smile

What do you actually expect them to do?

It will just be your Mother. Everyone else will have got away on timesmile

One flight arrives/departs every 40 seconds at Heathrow. That means nearly 1,000 flights a day are cancelled or end up in the wrong place, say 150,000 people if flights are cancelled. Add the other closed airports across Europe and you are talking around 500,000 people stuck in the wrong place at the busiest time of the year. Even if the weather suddenly turned perfect, its going to take a few days to clear that backlog....

Its a bd when it happens, but it does.

^^^^^ this. Just amazes me that people think that all the 'canceled' flights are just rescheduled with a few hundred spare aircraft from the Arizona desert into non-existent take-off slots. We got a flight canceled last year about this time. Luckily it was the out-bound leg. We just packed up and headed home, just wasn't worth looking at rebooking given the weather forecasts.
