Off to Hanoi on the 27th December with the missus. Plan is to take the night train to Sapa for a couple of days, come back, do a day trip to Ninh Binh or whatever it's called, and then head to Halong Bay for 2/3 days before coming back to Hanoi.

I've done Southern Vietnam before, and can't see me coming back to the North in the near future, so any tips on anything I've missed would be greatly appreciated!

You might want to bring either a sweatshirt or a light jacket as the temperature does drop to almost single figures in Ha Noi, if you're venturing up to Sapa, it can get colder, so scarf and gloves (pinned to your cuff) could be dress of the day. I take it you have a visa sorted? or at least the paperwork to pick one up on arrival, just to let you know the immigration cards you had to fill in are all finished now too.

Enjoy your trip.

Cheers for on and off forum advice phumy. I've heard it's going to be a bit chilly, so will dig out my cold weather stuff from storage. Visa is getting sorted as we speak (same day was 265SGD apparently - sod that!!!!).

Sapa may be snowy, so we'll see what the weather is doing when we get there I think!
