I'm looking to go and have a peep at the Northern Lights after Christmas. Have to be back by Jan 3rd for work on the 4th.

Thought about Canada as I assume its cheaper once you get there, but not sure and not got anything set in stone.

Has anyone got any recommendations?

Failing that, anyone got any ideas for a break anyway. Not bothered as long as its out of the UK!

Not so easy to get far enough north in Canada, Toronto, Calgary or banff etc aren't going to give you a good chance unless your real lucky. Edmonton is about the same latitude as Leeds and is one of the more northern major city's in Canada, you would need to get up to yellowknife or similar to stand a good chance.

Better bet would be Tromso Norway, way inside the arctic circle and only a couple of hours flying time with daily flights via Oslo, plenty of hotels restaurants, roads are open and drivable with a rental car. other options would be northern Finland or Iceland

I believe Tromso is the place to go in Europe for the Northern lights. I think they also call it the 'Paris of the North' so I assume it is quite nice. I quite fancy riding my bike up to the North Cape at some point and intend to go via Tromso. Might wait for summer for that though...

ETA: Doh! Beaten to it.

I posted this the other week

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... Lights

I have booked a 3 night break with Transun staying in the Davvi Lodge in Finish Lapland. It is full board but as I understand it fairly basic. The flights are Gatwick to Tromso with a 3 hour transfer. Included in the trip are snowmobiling, dog sledging and something to do with reindeer(?). Price per person £900.

We stayed at the Radisson SAS, It was quite nice, rooms maybe a little small but then i think they tend to be anyway compared to the US, good breakfast buffet and close to the town centre for restaurants etc. Plenty of similar hotels nearby though but have no experience of them.

There doesn't seem to be any flights to Tromso at the mo unless its a 3 stopper, so its looking a bit too much of an epic. Some of the flights have a 1/2 hour connection window as well.

Churchill, manitoba is supposed to be a good spot for the northern lights, however it cant be guaranteed that you will see them as they are a natural phenomenon

It would be cheaper to go to norway!

Should be cheaper as I'm closer!

I'm going to have 8 pints of stella and a kids kaleidescope. If I lie on my back in the snowy back garden, should be near enough.

The only trouble being that you cant usually do both at the same time - polar bears autumn, the lights winter/spring
