Put this in the wrong category so trying again. Looking to book a couple of flights to Ancona or Rimini next August and quite keen to buy in the next couple of days before the VAT goes up. However a pal says we'd be better off waiting till Spring when a load more seats are suddenly made available. Any travel experts on here who know whether that's true or not?

Ryan air do direct flights to Ancona from Stansted, more frequent in the summer, it's pot luck on pricing, usually cheaper the further ahead you book. You should pay around £100 return, most of that is fees & taxes! No other direct flights from the UK.

Don't think there is VAT on air fares???

Is that right? I'd seen the Ryanair from Stansted, he's the cheapest by a fair way, about £115 as compared to Alitalia from LHR at about £170, we live in Wilts so not convinced about the Ryanair saving. I agree with you that early booking is best, not just for price but also availability, but this pal of ours was quite insistent about waiting till spring.

I *think* you'll find that air travel is 0% rated anyway.
