Hey,

Going to Venice in May 2011, haven't booked a hotel yet, but got flights. So was wondering if anyone has been and can recommend a hotel or an area to stay in?

Also what things to do, going for 4 nights.

Cheers in advance

May is a good time to go as it won't be stinking hot (literally) and won't be rammed with tourists.

I stayed here http://www.sanclementepalacevenice.com/

Is just outside Venice on it's own island and has a shuttle boat that runs ever 15mins into Venice. Has it's own outdoor pool which is worth it's weight in gold after spending an entire day trekking around.

I recommend you take a private water taxi from the airport. Is about €100 or there abouts for the 20min drive but is well worth it.

The Guggenheim was my favourite museum there.

Be prepared to get ripped off a bit though...the whole town is geared towards tourism and I didn't have a single meal under €100 and several a lot more than that.

Enjoy!

Use the Vaporetto (Water Bus) to get about

http://www.actv.it/en

http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venic...

The fares have gone up a bit over the past few years but day/week passes are still great value.

Route 2 is a great round trip taking you up through the Grand Canal, try and get seats on the open front deck, not always easy!

Route 5 (and others) gets you over to Murano island and the famous glass works, worth a visit.

Eating out does not need to cost too much, a pizza and a beer can be had for 20EUR, just avoid the main tourist areas.

Other tip is get a map and get lost, get out of the main tourist traps and enjoy the real Venice, you will walk...a lot!

Venice does go to sleep at night, if your into clubbing and pubbing then you will be disappointed.

I stayed, albeit about 5 years ago, here www.hotelkette.com and couldnt wish for a better location, 2 min walk from St Mark's Square, but in a quiet little street so not subject to the tourist masses.

As said above, the best way I found to see Venice, was to just walk, and walk - you cant really get completely lost as basically you reach either the end of the island, or some famous sight you recognise.

Vaporetto is the best way to get around, dont need expensive water taxis or anything, just get a ticket where you can hop on and off without worrying.

+2 lovely hotel - a great place to retreat to from the main islands - arriving there by water taxi from the airport was a great way to start the break.

Some years ago we also went there in May on our Honeymoon although we arrived at the railway station on the Orient Express rather than at the airport so I can't comment on the water taxi. We did take one out to Murano (free of charge promotion) and as some one who appreciates powerful engines it was a great experience as the driver cleared the canals and was into open water he lit up the big marine engines and the thing stood up out of the water and raced to Murano. As for staying off the main island we weren't so sure, we met some people who were at the Cipriani and although quite clearly 5* luxury they said it was a pain having to get the boat back every night and I think we had it right by staying close to St Marks at the Luna Baglioni http://www.baglionihotels.com/en/destinations/veni... . As well as the trip to Murano we did the Opera (before the Mafia burnt it down) and plenty of art galleries etc. but to be honest just by walking into the chiesas and chapels you will get your fill of Canelettos, Michelangelos, Botticellis, Rembrandts and Rigalettos wink As has been said, get a book of tickets for the vapouretto and think of it as a tube network, hop-on hop-off. We loved and plan to go back soon...

I would highly recommend this small hotel

Stayed here on our honeymoon and it was fantastic. No restaurant, although that is hardly an issue in Venice, but the Breakfast was lovely there. The rooms were superb!
