Tourist visa for Russia

Does anyone know if you still require a Russian sponsor for a 10 day single entry Tourist visa?
I have had a look at visitrussia.org and the visa form makes no mention of sponsors details. It is mentioned else where on the site but not really pertaining to the 10 day tourist.

I applied just before xmas, and used a document from a sponsor!

Also bear in mind that it's currently the holiday period in Russia - everything is shut down until the 10th (including the visa company in the UK)
