Family holiday to Spain?
Discussion
I'm looking for somewhere to have a shortish break at the end of June.
I'd like some sun and have been told that Minorca (?) is ideal for the kids (aged 5 and 9 by then).
Ideally I don't want to be flying for any more than 2 hrs and preferably from an airport no further south than Birmingham (am in Notts.)
Having never been to Spain before I was just after a few pointers for a family stay.
Cheers.

I'd book a villa privately and get a cheap flight. Not been to Menorca but I heartily recommend Mallorca and a hire car. Base yourself around the tourst-oriented Cala D'Or and you have the choice of 5 or six coved beaches. Cala D'Or also has the advantage of offering cheap eating out (very cheap in many cases). You can drive up to a safari park on the east coast or to the picturesque mountains in the west and to the fantastic Valdemossa village. Threis also an old monastery not far away with spectacular views, a fabulous beach at Colonia de St Jordi and the amazing Soller railway which runs from Palma.

I used to think Mallorca was a sort of uncouth Brit-haven but in my experience, it is a stunningly beautiful island with everything to recommend it. I loved most places we went with the possible exception of Alcudia (fairly featureless front) and Puerta Pollenca in the north, again as it's just not as picturesque as the south. Have a look at property prices in Mallorca and you'll see how desirable it is.
I think Menorca tends to be rockier and cliffier and quieter though Mallorca is certainly not loud in any way.
Spain (mainland) itself is not bad though not as good. Costa Blanca tends to be busy though I would recommend Calpe and Javea and further south, Peniscola where they filmed El Cid (the latter a bit of a drive from an airport though). The Costa Almeria and Costa Del Sol tend to have poorer beaches with more gravelly sand but have fabulous roads inland not inundated by toll roads (as the Costa Blanca tends to be). Places like Mojacar are very nice too but seem to have exploded in terms of size and tourists since I went there in 2002 and 2010. the area around Murcia is still being developed and is a lot quiter and more unspoilt but possibly too quiet.

Mallorca also has some great mountain roads, if you can deal with the start/stop of avoiding cyclists.
Especially the road from Port de Pollenca to the lighthouse at Cap de Fermentor.
