Although I'm planning a holiday in the summer, I wanted to take the OH to London for a weekend. Problem is every site I look on all seem to be stupidly expensive, anyone got any personal experience with hotels or serviced apartments that they can recommend?

What do you call stupidly expensive ?

An idea of budget would assist with getting better responses.

Well for 2 people, maybe 2 nights at no more than £200, so all the 2's wobble

How about a Premier Inn biggrin

We have used them in a few places now and they are clean tidy and usually well placed for City visits etc. The one near Limehouse allows you to get into the West End etc via the DLR and tube very easily and perhaps you can get the £29 a night offer they keep pushing. You could then use the other £140 or so for food, drinks etc.

Premier Inn is normally much more than £29 in London. TBH you will struggle to get an average hotel for £100 per night. But try Novotel at Hammersmith (i think) they sometimes have good deals and are close to the tube. Avoid Holiday Inn at Kings Cross!

I stay in London at leat 4 times a month during the week it can be hard to get a room for under £200 for one night. Some do good weekend deals. Hilton currently have an Anyweekend offer and the Metropole may come in budget and thats a nice hotel in a good location for Oxford Street. (Just got 2 rooms at Hilton Park lane for a weekend, 2 nights on exec floor for just under £1000, would normally have been £2k so do check the Hilton site. I have got metropole before for £120.)

Also try Late Rooms and Last Minute (some of the Top Secret Hotels on Lastminute are a good deal)

There is one in Kensington too which is rather good at around £90 per night. The breakfast buffet is about £8 but the coffee machine will make about 4 different types and in London you can pay £3 easily for a cup, I had about four latte coffees with my monster fry up. We were full after breakfast so didn't bother with lunch and instead dined out in the evening as there are a number of good restaurants and pubs within walking distance. It's only a short walk to the Natural history museum which is free and the area itself is very nice and the staff friendly.

Louis.

I think you are going to struggle a little on that budget. That is outside the Premier Inn's rates for Central London. I wouldn't recommend Travel Lodge unless you are desperate.

You might get better deals for non-weekend dates, or some of the independents do three night weekend packages only. Your dates will also have an effect on pricing. Two of Feb's weekends will be seen as premium because of St Valentine's Day etc.

This is a favourite of mine http://www.sevendialshotellondon.com/ but only does the 3 night thing via the internet. You might get a 2 night price by contacting them direct rather than an internet booking perhaps. Its a lovely little hotel right in the theatre district.

Try here http://www.hotels-london.co.uk/ and try a variety of different dates etc.

premier/travelodge are very expensive for this type of thing, pretty far away from the best way to stay. I am off down there with new miss next weekend and despite an allergy to cheap hotels esp for that type of trip (narmsayin) i thought i would check prices anyway and you would be looking at £200 for travelodge covent garden. Quick browse to lastminute saw a 5* riverbank hotel with pool for same price. No brainer.

Where I put the Parents when they are visiting - Overlooking Tower Bridge and St. Katherine Dock, close to the tube etc, less than a tenner in to the West end in a cab, and if you keep your eyes peeled you can get it for £79, max £99 a night.
